Homeless and the Democratic Convention

Posted by ERISKAY on July 28, 2008 at 3:12 PM

The Headlines and  first sentence (in italics) is from the July 16, 2008 edition

of the Rocky Mountain News, Denver, CO

Denver's homeless may be appreciating the extreme ice, Egyptian mummies or the space okyssey at a museum - or maybe checking out a screening of Dark Knight - instead of panhandling during the Democractic  National  Convention.

So what is up with this?

The Rocky Mountain News in Denver said the homeless are to be not seen and heard and that they will  gain some culture, outside of the Denver area during the Democratic National Election.  So I thought these were the very people the Dems were trying to help?

Do you think that putting a weak band-aid on Denver's problem is going to hide the fact that some people are panhandlers, some are war veterans, a lot are old, some have lost their homes because they lost their jobs, or were conned into first time buying scams by credible banks that the government supports.  Some of these people I have literally seen go into trash cans and eat the food that was thrown out by others.  They were gaunt and sad, and it made me sick.  I went to give one guy $10 to go get a meal as he pulled a burrito out of the trash.  He was very, very thin and tired looking - a ghost - and I literally had co-workers who sait in judgement saying he would just drink it away.  They didn't know him or his story.  I could give a crap if they drink it away, as they obviously have terrible problems to begin with, and we all look the other way and fight a war to help others.

Governor Ritter and Mayor Hickenlooper should be ashamed of themselves.  I am not afraid of the homeless, and the situation is what it is.  Granted, there are some panhandlers and people that take advantage of others for a reason, but I have see the homeless downtown, firsthand experience.  It breaks my heart.  Truly, what has happened to the compassion of our country?  We go for big ticket item events such as the convention and yet, ignore the very people in our own country that need help.

I also wonder, and a bit of "change of subject" what is going to happen during primary elections.  It is something to think about as I end my opinions.

If Barack is winning in the prmary election, and then something happens at the polls (like the Gore/Bush fiascos to change the percentage of votes) well, I just wonder how minorities will deal with this - will we be heading towards another civil war or rights issue?

I am so perplexed about my feelings with respect to "who to vote for" as I do not see anything changing except more violations of our souls.
